    Exhibitions and Loans

    During the fiscal year, 301 lenders from 19 countries and 30 states loaned 1,159 works of art to 10 exhibitions (six special loan exhibitions and four in-house exhibitions). The Gallery also worked on another 13 projects scheduled to open in the next five years and administered the tour of five exhibitions. United States Government Indemnity was secured for three exhibitions on view in fiscal year 2023, resulting in savings of more than $2,491,412 in insurance premiums.

    National Gallery Loans to Temporary Exhibitions

    The National Gallery administered the loan of 621 works of art to 160 sites during the fiscal year 2023. These included several important works lent for display from the museum’s permanent collection galleries including Claude Monet’s The Cradle—Camille with the Artist’s Son Jean to the Musée des impressionnismes Giverny, Johannes Vermeer’s Girl with a Red Hat to the Rijksmuseum, Mark Rothko’s Untitled and No. 17 [or] No. 15 to the Mint Museum, and Alma Thomas’s Tiptoe Through the Tulips and Irene Rice Pereira’s The Circumnavigation of the Sphering of the Poles to the North Carolina Museum of Art.
