National Gallery Nights
Revolutionary Women
Thursday, March 13, 6:00–9:00 p.m.
Lottery for registration opens on Monday, March 3, at 10:00 a.m. and closes on Thursday, March 6, at noon.
Celebrate the women of the art world, including the art and enduring legacy of Elizabeth Catlett.  Explore the exhibition and make your own art by experimenting with printmaking techniques. Then, immerse yourself in powerful, electrifying gospel music from The Legendary Ingramettes and dance to the sounds of DJ Chan Don.

Learn about Catlett as an artist, experience performances and demos, and create your own works inspired by printmaking techniques at drop-in artmaking. All ages are welcome.

Celebrating Elizabeth Catlett Symposium

This three-part symposium explores the artist’s life and work with living artists, experts, and members of her family. It is held in collaboration with Howard University’s 35th Annual James A. Porter Colloquium.

Studio Practice and Workshop Collaborations, 12:00 p.m.
Hear from artist Susan J. Goldman and Dalila Scruggs about Elizabeth Catlett’s studio practice and workshop collaborations. Goldman published Catlett’s last print series and Dalila Scruggs is the exhibition curator and Augusta Savage Curator of African American Art at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Her Life Story and the Role of Howard University, 12:45 p.m.
Learn from scholars K.E. Coney-Ali, Melanie Herzog, and Lowery Stokes Sims about artist Elizabeth Catlett’s life through new research, personal memories of the artist, and how her art was championed at Howard University. 

Performance: Howard Gospel Choir, 2:00 p.m.
The Howard Gospel Choir delivers a centerpiece performance honoring the exhibition. Elizabeth Catlett, a Howard University graduate and DC native, tapped these local beginnings to launch a distinguished career that spanned almost 70 decades.

A Conversation with Juan Mora Catlett, 3:00 p.m.
Mexican filmmaker Juan Mora Catlett's documentary portrait, Betty y Pancho, centers the half-century marriage and collaboration of his parents: Elizabeth Catlett and Mexican painter, printmaker, and muralist, Francisco Mora. Juan Mora Catlett will share excerpts from the film and his reflections.

Legacy and Creative Inheritance, 4:00 p.m.
Join us for a conversation with Elizabeth Catlett’s granddaughters, Ifé, Naima, Nia, and Crystal Mora, moderated by Terence Keel. Together they will discuss their grandmother’s artistic legacy and their family’s creative inheritance.

Color Lines Across the United States and Mexico: Wyeth Foundation for American Art Symposium
Friday, May 2, 10:15 a.m. –5:00 p.m.

This day-long symposium takes inspiration from Catlett’s artistic practice across both the US and Mexico and themes central to her work, including race and representation as well as women in art, and how such themes are reflected in artistic practices past and present.

Legends: The Films by Juan Mora Catlett
This film series presents examples of cinematic work by multi-award-winning director Juan Mora Catlett, son of artist Elizabeth Catlett. Renowned as a director of documentary and narrative films in Mexico, Juan Mora Catlett visits the National Gallery from Mexico City to discuss his own work and celebrate the legacy of his family.
